The Glass Menagerie is a memory play, and its action is drawn from the memories of the narrator, Tom Wingfield. Set in St. Louis in 1937. Tom who is also a character in the play, is an aspiring poet who toils in a shoe warehouse to support his mother, Amanda, and invalid sister, Laura. Amanda seeks a husband for her daughter, and Tom brings home a Gentleman caller, but matters do not go to plan.
